Joe Hackett graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1996 and obtained a post-graduate diploma in legal practice from the College of Law at Chester in 1997. He was admitted on to the Role of Solicitors in 1999 in England and Wales and later in Northern Ireland.
Since joining Sheridan & Leonard Solicitors in March 2004, Joe worked closely with founding Partner, Seamus Leonard, in running the Criminal Law Department. He is a certified advanced trial advocate (National Institute of Trial Advocacy/Law Society of Northern Ireland, 2006) and a member of the Solicitors’ Criminal Bar Association for Northern Ireland. He has extensive experience in Terrorism Act and PACE arrests and regularly appears in the Magistrates Court including Youth Court proceedings, and Crown Court cases representing people charged with all types of criminal offences, including a number of high profile criminal cases in Northern Ireland. Joe has also represented clients in cases involving Proceeds of Crime applications and PACE warrants, extradition cases involving European Arrests Warrants, Appeals to the Northern Ireland Court of Criminal Appeal and has extensive experience in dealing with both general prison welfare rights and specific expertise in respect of Parole Commission cases.
When not dealing with criminal law cases Joe also has extensive experience in immigration law, administrative law and has successfully pursued judicial review challenges of decisions made by the government and other state bodies in the High Court and the Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland.
